Manual lymphatic drainage
Manual lymphatic drainage is a special massage technique with which limphatic blockage in the tissue can be eliminated. The method was developed by Emil Vodder a danish physiotherapists. The lymphatic vessel system of the body takes fluid (lymph) and forwards it to the blood vessels. An abnormal functioning of the drainage system leads to accumulation of fluid in the intermediate cell spaces (edema).
With manual lymph drainage the therapist massages the subcutaneous tissue, using gentle pressure, in the direction of the lymph outflow, ie to the regional lymph nodes. With a variety of different techniques, ie pumping, rotary, cupping as well as circulatory movements the skin is moved against the subcutis and stretched slightly . Thus the motor function of the lymph vessels is activated and the removal of excess tissue is eased.
Application method:
- with edema
- after sports injuries
- after surgery
- during pregnancy
